WOW! I don’t know what happened to me this last weekend! I had a field day at the party I was at on Saturday and then again on Sunday…by “field day” I mean that I ate like it was the end of the world.
I believe in, and live my life, using moderation as the rule. What that means to me is that if something is WORTH it, I will have some…usually just a little. If it’s REALLY worth it and not around all that often, I might have what would be considered a “regular-sized portion” :).
We had a birthday party on Saturday evening. I am not a cake person…just not my favorite thing. This cake was really good. SO I thought I would have a little. A little turned into a LARGE piece.
It was also Mother’s Day weekend…admittedly, for those who know me, not my favorite holiday. I am in that group of women who have lost both their mom and mother-in-law (who I happened to love, as well), so the holiday is a bit of a bummer for me.
Maybe that was it, but it seemed that there wasn’t a carb that I wasn’t interested in.
I looked back over the weekend on Monday morning and thought, “What the heck was I doing?”
SO, as a trainer, what do you think I did then?
- …continue to beat myself up for the rest of the week (I was “bad” and should feel “bad” because of it)
- …continue eating that way for the rest of the week (what the heck!? the week is already ruined)
- …plan my workouts and eating for the rest of the week (STOP and THINK. Regain the perspective I temporarily lost. Refocus on what I have prioritized in my life.)
The answer is “3”. I went for a run on Monday. I lifted today. I am paying attention to what I am eating. A day or two away from the consistent way I usually live does not have to be a continuing mistake.
How would YOU respond? I didn’t pull the first two choices out of the air…those are both reactions women have shared with me after having to a day or two of “not great” nutritional choices or missing a few workouts.
Consistency is difficult. By definition, it means a REALLY, REALLY long time. It is unrealistic to think that consistency means every, single day without fail, without a “blip”.
That’s what I like about C4 (The “Consistency Consistency, Consistency Challenge”). For 14 days you focus on making good nutrition and exercise choices. During those 14 days you keep track of your workouts, your nutrition and how you feel. Get a few “wins” in the consistency column and you are off and running.
