JANUARY 6, 2013
We are big fans of Consumer Reports in our house. The February 2013 issue contains an article evaluating some popular diet plans/tools. I will not copy the article here, but wanted to hit some highlights.
- A few of my clients have started using My Fitness Pal – a free smart phone app and website that tracks your food intake. Studies have consistently shown that those who track what they eat lose more than those who do not. My Fitness Pal was the most highly rated of the “Do It Yourself” plans.
- Weight Watchers was the best-rated commercial plan. One reason that I believe it works is that it teaches HOW to look at food. It teaches nutrition and portion control. Food are not ELIMINATED. It is a plan that can serve you the rest of your life.
- Weight loss is not a one-size fits all proposition. What works for one, will not work for all. Alice H. Lichtenstein, director of the Cardiovascular Nutrition Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University said, “If the first try doesn’t work, don’t give up. Just try something else.” There is not ONE SINGLE SOLUTION.
My personal belief is that what you make a priority in your life gets done. If something is important enough, you will find a way to get it done.
I am NOT saying it is easy. I am NOT saying that it happens without setbacks. I am saying that if you STAY FOCUSED on it, it can happen.
How important is weight loss to you?
